THE TRAIL SCHOOL CONCEPT
Trail School was founded in 2009 from the imagination, observation, and expertise of one man, Sébastien Cornette. Today, it’s much more than just a method to train less but better. It rethinks the foundations of training around three pillars (muscle strengthening, technique,and cardiovascular development) and helps prevent injuries. It has become a real structure, expanding with multiple competencies and one ambition: to use the power of trail running to change lives.

To make trail running accessible to everyone, everywhere.
2. TWO MAIN AMBITIONS
- To shift paradigms and rethink the vision of training and practice, from beginners to athletes, from children to adults.
- To support, professionalize, and structure the growth of trail running in France and abroad.
3. THE TRAIL SCHOOL: MORE THAN JUST A METHOD
Initially: To develop and offer a vision of nature running and an innovative and inclusive method to guide adults and children into or towards sports, regardless of their level.
Since 2020: To train more professionals to safely and enjoyably coach a growing number of participants, both adults and now children.
From 2024: To continue expanding the “Trail School” network in France and abroad, becoming a key player in the trail and running ecosystem by developing expertise and training in other areas.
4. TRAIL SCHOOL IN NUMBERS
Over 35 Trail Schools in France (mainland and Réunion) and Switzerland.
400 coaches trained in the method, and 60 certified by 2024.
Nearly 3,500 members (adults and children) coached on the ground in individual or group sessions and virtually by certified Trail School coaches.
By joining a certified Trail School, athletes are supported by a coach trained by the school. These coaches undergo intensive and continuous training, with updated resources to maintain their skills and tools. They are also trained
in the importance of muscle strengthening and the specific technical work needed for trail running, in a “Run Less, Run Better” approach, a method proven in terms of both performance and injury prevention.
5. A BOOK
“Run Less, Run Better” by Editions Mons compiles the essence of the Trail School method and philosophy.
TRAIL SCHOOL TRAINING
Trail School offers training sessions for coaches who want to introduce, practice, and improve in trail running and running. These are structured into two levels of expertise (EDT Level 1 and EDT Level 2), incorporating both the theoretical
and practical basics of the Trail School method.
Three other training courses are also offered by Trail School, with both theoretical and practical components :
- Muscle strengthening for trail runners and runners
- Trail Seeds (youth trail running)
- Practical module in plains and urban environments
Who are these training sessions for? These sessions are open to physical trainers, coaches, physiotherapists, athletes, runners, and individuals. No specific profile or level is required.
EDT LEVEL 1
OBJECTIVE :
- To lead a group of trail runners with varying levels of experience.
- To focus on trail-specific running technique and muscle strengthening in your coaching.
- To provide solutions for all types of audiences.
- To design training programs for young trail runners, including scheduling and planning.
TRAINING PROGRAM
Theoretical part :
The fundamentals of trail running. Accessibility / Adaptation / Planning—how these three goals allow you to manage a heterogeneous group. Examples of programming and planning. Approach to training young athletes / scheduling and
planning / specificities.
Practical part :
Fieldwork: running technique, muscle strengthening, physiological development / demonstration of sessions / design and implementation of sessions.
EDT LEVEL 2
OBJECTIVE :
Building on « EDT Level 1 » training
- To design a detailed training plan for different development periods throughout the season.
- For each period, to specify the technical content of sessions based on 2 to 3 sessions per week.
TRAINING PROGRAM
Theoretical part
:
Identifying the general and specific needs of trail running training.
Designing the planning/scheduling based on the indicated periods (group work).
Critical analysis of different proposals.
Practical part
:
Fieldwork: examples of sessions for different development periods.
TRAIL SEEDS (GRAINES DE TRAILEURS)
OBJECTIVE :
To train young trail runners. Understanding the methodology for developing physical qualities in young trail runners. Offering specific, tailored training programs/schedules.
TRAINING PROGRAM
Theoretical part
:
Psychomotor development of children.
Growth and maturation processes of different systems.
Development of motor and physical skills (flexibility, strength, endurance…) / Differences between boys and girls / Adjustments based on Peak Height Velocity: what to focus on before, precautions during, and what to develop and maintain
afterward.
Examples of session programming.
Group-based session planning by participants.
Practical part
:
Demonstration of session organization: arrangement, animation, pedagogy. Pedagogical practical sessions for participants based on group-designed sessions / feedback on the sessions.

TRAIL TRAINING IN PLAINS AND URBAN ENVIRONMENTS
OBJECTIVE :
The professional objective of this course is to understand and apply the specificities of trail and ultra-trail training for a population living and training in plains and/or urban environments.
EDT DISTANCE COACHING
OBJECTIVE :
This course aims to equip trail running coaches with the skills to design personalized and effective remote training plans for athletes of all levels. It focuses on advanced planning, monitoring, and adaptation techniques based on
various individual and environmental factors.
